As the year comes to an end it's that time of year that we all start thinking about how we can make the next year better. What can we do to be the best version of ourselves that we can be. As the new year starts we do so well with those resolutions. But too often we are quick to put it all aside as life gets busy. We think it's ok to not take the time for ourselves because there are so many other things that are "more important". I am here to tell you that taking care of yourself NEEDS to be your top priority! If you don't take care of yourself then how will you be able to do everything else that needs to get done? So finding things you can do for yourself that you can stick to well help in the new year.
Improve Your Sleep
Lack of sleep or poor sleep is ignored too often. Its thought of as not a big deal if only a few hours of sleep happens a night. But Poor sleep habits contribute to anxiety. There are many ways to improve your sleep. But one of the top ways is to have a consistent time to go to bed and a set time to wake up. It's not a good idea to try and catch up on your sleep on the weekends. Striving to have 7-8 hours of sleep each night is the best we can do for our bodies to feel better.
Exercise More
I know most of you already know this, but exercise is great for your physical and mental health. Studies have shown that exercise is as effective as an antidepressant. Not to mention the physical benefits that come along with it. That's the good news. The bad news is that getting exercise is not easy for many people, especially those already suffering from the lack of motivation and energy. You don't have to make adding exercise to your daily routine a big deal. If you can't or don't wish to join a gym, there are many at home programs you can do. Also just getting out there for a walk is perfect. Improving your quality of sleep will be an added benefit to you as well.
Learn To Meditate
Research suggests that meditation reduces stress levels. It helps you be more effective in getting things done. It can get you out of time (pressures) and help put a pause on the moment. That helps you realize what is really important and allows you to slow things down. There are many Apps to teach you how to meditate and even give your topics to improve through your meditation. Find a nice quiet space, and light an aromatherapy candle. You do not have to plan long amounts of your time to it, 10 minutes a day to start off is enough to get you going.
Write In A Journal
Taking some time at the end of your day to write in a journal can be very beneficial. Writing about your day both the positive and negatives help to clear your mind. Taking a few minutes to slow things down, put on calming music, and lighting a candle will make the experience an important part of your relaxation routine.
Help Others
Taking some time to help others is a wonderful way to get out and release stress. Those social activities help to clearing the mind and create happiness. Not to mention the fun memories that you can take with you along the way. Social connections are very important to our mental health.
Be Grateful
As we look around the world today it is way too easy to find ungrateful people all around us. We need to slow down and recognize the things in our lives to be grateful for. It could be as small as someone holding the door for you today. Or maybe that you where able to get to the bus on time after rushing around the house to get things done before your day. But also it can be a great idea to schedule some time to enjoy the natural beauty around us in this beautiful world. Go for a hike, or sit on the porch and look at the countryside. Feel the sun on your face and hear the song from the birds. Take time for the simple things that has been given to us. If you are already writing in a journal maybe put down something you are grateful for each day. Remembering these things keeps us happier and gives us the peace of mind we need each day.
Be Nicer To Yourself
Changing how we treat ourselves doesn't happen overnight. so have patience when you find yourself slipping into the old habits and forgetting the promises you made. Take a moment to recommit and get your mind and body back on track. Do some yoga with calm music and an aromatherapy candle. Don't forget about you! Schedule something every day and commit to it. Resolutions usually end up broken, but they don't have to be. Wouldn't it be wonderful to look back at the end of the next year and find a happier healthier you? You are worth it.
