The Benefits of Burning Candles And Health

When thinking about setting a mood, ambiance, decoration, or relaxation, candles come to mind. But are there any health benefits to burning candles?
First it’s important to understand that there is a direct connection between a fragrance and moods. This happens when fragrance molecules bind to our nasal passages sending signals to the brain. The part of your brain that is effected by emotion, thoughts, and memory. These very same molecules also are small enough to interact with your nervous system. This is why some fragrances can lower blood pressure and stress.
Understanding all this makes it easier to see why candles can help us to release stress after a long day. Or to set a relaxing mood to unwind or stay calm.
Some people have concerns about allergies with candles. A Fragrance can trigger runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. This usually happens with scents that already trigger this effect even if it’s not in a candle. Also there are some that may have an allergy to Soy. Knowing and understanding what the candle is made from may be just as important as the fragrance. There has been controversy about Paraffin candles being toxic. This is not true at all! The paraffin wax that is used for candles today is made with FDA approved food grade Paraffin and not toxic chemicals as it was many years ago. Therefore it is just as natural of a candle as the soy or coconut wax candles. So if you are allergic to Soy or a particular fragrance then don’t worry there are other options open to you.
For the most part, Candles not only set the mood for relaxation, but also play a key part in improving our heath. Stress creates a domino effect slowly damaging many areas of our bodies. The fragrance of a candle can create a calming environment to relax your mind, and body. But being safe while burning your candle is key. So never leave a candle unattended. Always trim your wicks to 1/4 inch before every burn and every 4 hours thereafter. Always keep your candle away from children and pets. And keep away from drafts and flammable items. Stay safe and enjoy relaxing with your favorite candle!
